Appeals Training for Councillors

  • Category: Councillor Development and Governance

  • Cost: £75 + VAT members/£98 +VAT non-members of North West Employers

It is important that Councillors are comfortable in understanding their role as part of the appeals process given the potential cost to an organisation from unfair dismissal claims, particularly in the current climate, as well as the potential negative impact on employee morale of a poorly applied disciplinary process. This is a practical course during which you will:

  • Understand the process leading up to an Appeal Hearing and your role and remit on the Appeals Panel
  • Have the opportunity to "practice" an Appeal Hearing and discuss any issues and concerns in a safe environment
  • Strengthen the decision making process in appeals

Impact/outcomes

By attending this course you will have a greater understanding of the wider disciplinary process, the impact of Employment Tribunals and your role within the process.

Programme

  • Why have disciplinary procedures?
  • Understanding the investigation process and the distinction between discipline and capability.
  • The role of Members in the appeals process.
  • Key questions for appeals panellists.

Who should attend

Those Councillors who are new to the role of representing the Authority as members of internal appeals panels as part of the disciplinary process or who are experienced but who wish to refresh and broaden their existing knowledge.
