Why Coaching?

There is a growing recognition that coaching of individuals and teams within the context of their job roles and the objectives of their organisations is one of the most effective ways of creating excellent leadership and performance behaviours.

Coping with uncertainty, change and budget reductions are some of the many challenges facing local government.

Lancashire County Council and North West Employers recognise the value of coaching to support, develop, motivate and empower staff to perform to their full potential.

The emphasis of Lancashire's work is to build robust coaching skills which can be applied formally or informally in a variety of settings with colleagues, customers, partners and teams as and when the need arises.

A priority is to inspire participants to appreciate the value of coaching and the tremendous impact it can have.

We also believe in the value of observed practice and so everyone on our programmes is provided with the opportunity to coach and be coached.

External Accreditation

The Institute of Leadership and Management (ilm) has acknowledged the quality of Lancashire's programmes by allowing them to take an innovative building block approach, using existing and new products, to provide flexible options which culminate in the ilm Level 5 Certificate in Coaching & Mentoring in Management.

On successful completion, participants will be able to:

- Identify the characteristics of effective coaches and mentors

- Build a coaching relationship on truth, openness and trust

- Create coaching conversations using directive questioning and exquisite listening skills

- Use the GROW model effectively

- Utilise a variety of coaching tools and techniques

- Explore the impact of attitudes, values and beliefs in coaching

- Identify and address barriers to coaching

- Coach ethically and within appropriate boundaries

- Describe the value and contribution coaching and mentoring can add to an organisation

ilm Flexi-Build - How It Works

Step 1

2 Day Foundation Course in Coaching Skills for Managers (accredited as prior learning)

Experience has proved that for some managers a foundation course in coaching skills provides them with what they need to incorporate a coaching approach into their role and apply the skills during day to day management, 1-1 supervision sessions, appraisals and team meetings.

Step 2

2 Day Continuation Course in More Advanced coaching Skills (accredited as prior learning)

Some managers wish to further develop their skills and incorporate advanced tools and techniques to work with individuals in a more focused way. Exploration of these tools builds skills and confidence to assist managers to support individuals through change, and empower and motivate staff to take responsibility.
