The social media revolution!
Love it or loathe it, social media brings great opportunities to the public sector and provides a positive and integral part of how authorities communicate and engage with their communities. Our modern social landscape has been defined by how the public sector and media interact and convey information to the people. So what happens if the mass media industry that we think of as 'normal', suddenly goes through a revolution? What happens if it changes beyond recognition?
Impact/outcomes
This course will talk about the revolution in which a mass media is increasingly becoming social media and will question what this means for local authorities. In particular the following will be discussed:
The lessons of the election of President Barack Obama
Whether council PR departments are already out of date
The possibilities and problems of online engagement and what these might mean for the traditional town hall
The impact of social media upon the town hall workplace, schools and other avenues of society
A range of demographic evidence will be presented about the changing landscape of the media, population distribution and the creative potential of social media.
