Liz McQue - Chief Executive

Many in local government are concerned about the fall in turn-out in local elections and the dangers that presents both to democracy and civic society. This one day session will explore the causes of this perceived disengagement and identify ways for councillors to help narrow the deficit through engaging more effectively with their local communities.
The aims of this course will be to explore the reasons behind the perceived lack of engagement; to investigate alternative views of what is really going on in societies using the concepts of social capital and community leadership; to use councillors' own experience to highlight ways of engaging effectively with local communities; to identify effective engagement processes that are both relatively cheap and demonstrably effective.
The session will use case studies of engagement and disengagement to illustrate the core points. It will be activity based, giving all participants ample opportunity to share ideas with others and develop ideas together.
At the end of the course participants will have a clearer understanding of the reasons behind disengagement and the democratic deficit; have a toolkit of ideas to help them engage more effectively with local communities; have access to case studies of where this has happened to use as exemplars to guide their work and that of others in the authority.
