Councillors have a key role in scrutinising and approving the accounts of their councils prior to the 30th June deadline each year. These accounts are in a tightly prescribed format, with the detailed requirements changing each year. This course will give a basic overview of the content of local authority accounts using comparisons where relevant to private sector requirements with which many councillors will be more familiar. It will bring to life the underlying purpose and contents of the key statements which form part of councils' accounts and will suggest questions which councillors can ask in a more informed and meaningful way.
This course will enable you to define responsibilities for the Statement of Accounts and understand the basic structure of the statements and the key messages they relay. There will be opportunity to ask appropriate questions about the statements in your own councils.
The trainer will use a variety of briefings, discussions and short activities to emphasise the key learning points.
