Don't just have conversations - have courageous conversations...
Conducting difficult conversations about things like poor performance, inappropriate behaviour and negative attitudes are not things any of us look forward to. However, in the current economic climate there is going to be an increasing need to have courageous conversations and to manage them well.
In 2010, 500 managers were asked whether, in the last 6 months, they had put off having a conversation with a colleague or a member of staff - 99% said that they had. When asked whether the problem went away on its own:
4% said that it had resolved itself
43% said that it had got worse
49% said that it had stayed the same
4% said that someone else had tackled the issue
So what is it that makes a conversation difficult and how can we develop the skills to handle them effectively? One of the most commonly cited reasons for not having the conversation was the fear of doing it badly and therefore making the situation worse.
This workshop will review the reasons why we put off having these conversations and will provide practical ways to prepare and handle those critical encounters.
By the end of the session participants will be able to:
Who should attend: Middle, senior managers and leaders from all sectors.

Quotes from past delegates
"Attending Beyond Presentations and Beyond Conversations were the most significant learning experiences I have had throughout my career. Both sessions impacted on my self-knowledge and confidence as a manager and a leader and I continue to put into practice daily what I learnt. I wish we had access to a similar programme in New Zealand!"
Sue Roberts, University Librarian, Victoria University of Wellington, New Zealand
"One of the most thought provoking events I have attended in recent years. The opportunity to get feedback is rare and very valuable. I would highly recommend this course'"
David Rudd, Lawyer
"The Beyond courses have really made me stop and think. I have had insights into presence, presentations, negotiation and impact which have been worth their weight in gold. In real life, I've tried out many of things that I discovered with Deborah, Lois and the course participants; I can hardly believe how effective they have been. I strongly recommend the Beyond courses. They are something special."
