Strength Based Leadership: Applying Appreciative Inquiry Principles and Process

  • Category: Organisational Development

  • Times: 9.00 - 4.30

Many organisations now face greater challenge than ever before to their effectiveness, integrity and place in the world. Staff and stakeholders demand more opportunities to contribute and participate; there is an evergrowing need for innovation and uniqueness in the marketplace; and a widespread demand for openness and consistency regarding the link between profits and planet-wide sustainability. Many believe that our traditional reliance upon hierarchies of authority can no longer guarantee good governance. All this encourages us to look again at what we mean by leadership.

We will address the significant paradigm shift in leadership by looking at the changes and challenges taking place in leadership, reviewing the contribution of classical leadership models, recognising what winning means in both the public and private sectors and accepting the challenge to think systemically - leading through language and dialogue.

You will learn and experience a strength-based approach called Appreciative Inquiry. This is both a set of principles and a process for organisational change which search for the best in a system and build on that to develop a compelling image of the future. The key stakeholders design together the systems, relationships and skills to generate that vision.

You will have the opportunity to apply the AI principles and process to identify ways to increase effective leadership in an organisation. In this part of the workshop, you will choose how to begin using dialogue and story telling, decide how to support people by being courageous enough to listen and share power, determine where to use positive psychology research to generate or amplify best practice in your organisation and create an affirming leadership culture, identify specific crucial areas where leadership is needed in your organisation or in a client system and set out the steps to make some progress there.

Who should attend: This approach has been used by leaders, managers, consultants and change agents in businesses, governments, health systems and communities in this country, other European countries as well as North America and Asia.
