Supporting Councillor Development in Authorities

A key contact in every authority is the officer who is responsible for developing councillors. Officers are often from Democratic Services or from HR/Training. There will also be a councillor group or Committee who are involved in steering and promoting councillor development on behalf of councillors who work closely with officers.

Most authorities have good processes in place to support councillors and most have a comprehensive programme of development opportunities. They often offer Personal Development Planning (PDPs) so that individual and collective needs can be gathered and a programme of development opportunities designed to meet these needs.
