Since the coalition government announced its plans as part of the health and social care bill to transition responsibility for public health to local government there has been work on-going in the North West to familiarise public health staff with how local government works through the North West public health networks.

North West Employers through their work under the Transition Alliance now want to take this work a stage further by offering senior public health employees in the first instance the opportunity to come together to share their views, fears and hopes for the transition and to get to grips with the different ways in which local government works.

At the heart of this different way of working is the political dimension of local government. By attending this session you will get the opportunity to begin to explore what this means.

Delegates who attend this session will:

•  be given the opportunity to explore their views, hopes and fears for the transition
•  have the opportunity to hear what it's like to work in local government from a number of perspectives
•  explore how each local authority is different to work in
•  be given an introduction to working in a political environment and the key skills for doing this successfully
•  have the opportunity to work collaboratively with colleagues from across the North West to apply their learning to a scenario based activity
