Personal and Team Support

Developing talent is top of the agenda for local authorities. But development is a partnership between the employer building a learning culture and individuals and teams directing and shaping their own learning. This means:

  • Asking questions to gather feedback through specific examples and understanding of improvement areas
  • Seeing development as more than just attending a course
  • Being clear about how you learn
  • Looking for learning opportunities such as shadowing, taking part in projects and trying new experiences
  • Critically reflecting on practice. ‘How would I rate my performance?' ‘What did I do well' and ‘Where could I have improved?'
  • Seeking people to learn from and to learn with
  • Building a network of supportive relationships
  • Setting goals and taking action - where do you want to be next year, in five years?

Wigan has worked closely with NW Employers over the last few years and they provide independent support with the Chief Executive Appraisal process. It is important that members have the right support to undertake this important task and it has been really useful to have external facilitation from someone trusted within the local government family. North West Employers deliver our cabinet and senior management team away days and provide excellent support to help us develop our plans to improve the outcomes for the people of Wigan. NW Employers understand the challenges senior officers and politicians face which has proved invaluable in helping us work together as a leadership team
