Public Sector Leadership

The challenge for the public sector over the next few years is immense and key to securing better outcomes for the people of the North West will be innovative and courageous leaders.

At the heart of great public sector leadership will be the ability to work collaboratively across different organisations and sectors. North West Employers has been working with partners to provide opportunities for leaders from different sector to work and learn together.

The focus of our work is:

  • Collaborative leadership - providing opportunities for leaders to learn together
  • Developing organisational cultures - developing approaches that focus on improving performance where people can thrive
  • Developing sustainable learning and improvement - developing new approaches to skills to support the next generation of public sector leaders

Key activities and outputs for this year include:

  1. The creation of a Leadership 'Marketplace' which will include access to online learning resources and learning tools
  2. Setting up a dialogue on organisational transformation which will include the latest thinking from leading-edge practitioners and the opportunity to share learning, case studies and success stories across the region
  3. Creation of a regional coaching strategy and ongoing regional coaching programmes for further information - see 'Coaching in Organisations'
  4. Supporting collaboration across the public sector in the North West including support for chief executives
We have undertaken a number of joint initiatives with NW Employers and have found the partnership to be one that is based on collaboration and mutual benefit producing very productive, proactive, value for money interventions that have resulted in joint learning for senior leaders. As well as the personal leadership learning, the networks have helped develop relationships across the sectors leading to an understanding of the different perspectives and more informed joint working.
