Freedom of Information for Councillors

  • Category: Councillor Development and Governance
  • Date: No current presentations
  • Times: 1.30 - 4.30
  • Cost: £80 members/£104 non members of NW Employers (£70 if you book on the morning session on DP) + VAT
  • Venue: North West Employers, Manchester

Freedom of Information has never been as high on the agenda. The coalition government is increasing the amount of information that councils are obliged to publish (including salaries and the details of any spending over £500), and the Information Commissioner has started to take enforcement action against councils who fail to comply.

Councillors need to know how FOI works, what information might be disclosed, and what can be withheld.

On this course you will:

  • Understand the fundamentals of the FOI Act
  • Assess why information must be disclosed
  • Make informed decisions if involved in the FOI process

Programme:

  • What is the Freedom of Information Act, and what are the main features?
  • Does FOI apply to Councillors?
  • Campaigns, expensive requests and nuisance applicants
  • Publishing information
  • What information can be refused?

Who should attend: Councillors, Democratic Services staff or others who work with councillors on a regular basis

Councillor courses can be run morning, afternoon and evening to suit councillor availability and busy schedules. Please contact us for more information.
