Councillor Role Descriptions and Development Frameworks

Role descriptions for councillors are widely used and are gaining in popularity. They can be used to promote local democracy and the role of a councillor. Descriptions for more specialist roles, such as scrutiny chair, can identify knowledge and skills required and be used to identify training and development needs. They are often used to aid personal development planning and for planning member development programmes.

Role descriptions are often linked to a wider development framework; two widely used in the North West are the Welsh Local Government Association Framework and the IDeA Political Skills Framework, although there are many others. Click on the related links to download examples of role descriptions and a copy of each framework.
