New Economy, New Jobs

Following the recession, the wind down of Regional Development Agencies and the creation of Local Enterprise Partnerships, councils are keen to play their part in working with the Private and Third sectors to generate local prosperity and jobs.  Current economic circumstances with growing unemployment and a sluggish economy are areas of concern.  In response to a survey of councillors earlier in the year we are launching a "Local Economy" Network. This will be targeted at helping councils deal with a number of the issues.  Over the coming months a range of meetings and events will be available for Councillors and Senior Practitioners/Managers to join together to share knowledge, develop new approaches, identify good practice and produce new policies and practices.

The survey identified a number of areas of interest which we will initially focus on addressing.   On Thursday, 30 March 2011 for interested participants a Strategic Roundtable was held at North West Employers on the topic of "New Economy, New Jobs".

There are real prospects for new jobs in emerging growth sectors such as low carbon, energy, media and digital. However, not every area can expect direct investment and jobs so what else can we do to benefit from new economic sectors such as upgrading local skills, improving supply chains?

This meeting consisted of:

  • briefings from specialists in new economy sectors providing a realistic appraisal of who and where can benefit
  • a sharing of perspectives
  • a detailed assessment of economic prospects

The Low Carbon Economy, Media Economy and the Digital Economy were Industries given special attention.  The Roundtable proved to be of very high value to the attendees.  In line with our practice, we are committed to sharing and learning and we are making available the documents that were produced to support the discussions.

On this page you will find:

  • Speakers Presentations
  • A Video Clip from the discussion

We hope the material proves to be useful to you and please share it with others.  To develop the "Local Economy" Network North West Employers wish to collaborate with you and others.  It will only be effective if there is significant interest and levels of active participation.

If you are interested in joining the Network and receiving information and invitations to future events please contact Dennis Artess at North West Employers

We would like to place on record our thanks to the North West Improvement and Efficiency Partnership for providing the funding to cover the costs of the Network for the next few months.
