Skills

The local government workforce has skill deficits at every level - literacy, numeracy, ICT and higher level qualifications. The 2009 Skills for Growth - the National Skills Strategy and the 2005 Leitch Review of Skills highlighted how UK skill levels must improve to make - and keep - our economy competitive at an international level.

Through the Skills Pledge, most North West local authorities have already committed to reviewing their skills needs and investing in skills improvement. We are supporting authorities to achieve their skills objectives through direct advice and skills networks.

Our online self assessment tool will help you to review your progress, identify priorities and learn about good practice from other authorities.

Through our annual North West Local Government Skills Awards, we recognise significant achievements made by authorities through their investment in skills.
