As employees, apprentices earn a wage and work alongside experienced staff to gain job-specific skills and receive training to work towards nationally recognised qualifications. Anyone living in England, over 16 and not in full-time education, can apply. New and existing members of the workforce are eligible and employers receive support in meeting training costs (provided the employee does not already hold a degree level qualification).
There are three levels; Apprenticeship (level 2 equivalent), Advanced Apprenticeship (level 3 equivalent) and Higher Apprenticeship (level 4 equivalent).
Apprenticeships take between one and four years to complete depending on the level of apprenticeship, the apprentices's ability and the type of work involved.
We work with partners such as the National Apprenticeship service (NAS) to help authorities develop apprentice opportunities in their own workforce and in the local economy and have a detailed good practice case study from Lancashire County Council - you can access both via our related links.
